Creating evaluation questionnaires in electrical and electronics VET

We present the use that a VET teacher makes of Artificial Intelligence to generate short control questions, extract images to create training content and for Arduino C programming for VET students of electrical and automatic installations in Spain. In Spain, VET students of Electrical and Automatic Installations are trained for two years in the assembly and maintenance of telecommunication infrastructures in buildings, electrical machines, automated systems, low-voltage electrical installations and home automation systems.

VET students between 17 and 25 years old.

Their qualification corresponds to Level 4 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (MECU). This level corresponds to level 4 of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning.

The context that has led the teacher to use GPT-4 for the creation of questionnaires, extract images to create content and receive support for programming with Arduino C is based on the need to:

  • Reduce workload. Creating short quizzes requires time and effort on the part of the teacher that increase their workload. The need to reduce this burden leads the teacher to use GPT-4, which allows tasks such as the creation of short questionnaires to be automated and adjusted to the level of the students.
  • Find royalty-free images to use in training content and that fit your needs. There are several banks of royalty-free images, but it is difficult to find free and royalty-free images that fit the specific needs of the teacher to complement the training content and teaching materials. This need leads the teacher to use GPT-4, through which with DALL· E can create images tailored to your needs.
  • Sometimes the teacher encounters doubts or problems in the codes to program electrical circuits with Arduino. Searching the internet for solutions is time-consuming for the teacher, leading them to use GPT-4 for support and assistance in solving problems with code, optimizing scripts, and even receiving tips for creating dynamic activities for their students.

Although the impact cannot yet be analyzed in this teacher’s classroom, the use of GPT-4 in the education of VET students of electrical and automatic installations can have a significant impact on both teachers and students.

On the one hand, in the case of teachers, the use of GPT-4 will generate a long-term impact thanks to:

  • Saving time in preparing exams and assessment quizzes.
  • The improvement of the quality of teaching materials with adapted and personalized images that facilitate the understanding of the concepts to students.
  • Improving the quality of practical activities in the classroom.
  • The ability to innovate in the classroom, combining traditional and innovative methodologies.

On the other hand, in the case of students, the use of GPT-4 in their VET education will generate a significant impact since:

  • It will allow them to acquire knowledge in a more dynamic way, clarifying doubts and providing explanations with an innovative methodology.
  • In the case of students with special needs, the personalization and adaptation of the materials will help them in their inclusion in the classroom.
  • It will allow them to improve their critical thinking skills, as they will learn to search for information, contrast information, improve their writing skills, problem-solving, etc. (some of the key elements of critical thinking).
  • Interest in performing tasks in the classroom will increase, as the use of GPT-4 will allow them to be more dynamic and entertaining.
  • It will allow them to acquire digital skills, essential for their access to the labour market.

To summarize, the integration of GPT-4 into the VET of electrical and automatic installations can generate a significant and positive impact for both trainers and trainees. Teachers can benefit from greater efficiency and reduced workload, as well as innovative educational resources, while students will receive more personalized, interactive, dynamic training that allows them to acquire key competences for their access to the labour market.

In this case, the teacher has used ChatGPT-4. This is the fourth iteration AI of the GPT series developed by OpenAI. Since its first versions, OpenAI’s language models have improved significantly in terms of comprehension and text generation, and the GPT-4 version represents this evolution. It is an improved version compared to the previous ones that has multiple advantages such as:

  • It has a more advanced and precise compression capacity.
  • You can dialogue in a more coherent way.
  • You can generate higher-quality text, adjusting your responses to the context provided by the user.
  • Supports multiple languages.
  • It helps in the creation of educational materials with detailed explanations.

To use ChatGPT-4 you need a computer with an internet connection and an up-to-date browser. It is a multilingual AI, but it performs better in English. Unrestricted use of GPT-4 requires a paid Plus subscription on OpenAI of $20 per month for individual use.

To which points the teacher must pay specific attention?

In all cases in which a teacher makes use of Artificial Intelligence for education, it is important that they pay attention and review all the information that the AI provides, making sure that the answers and materials they create are correct and there are no mistakes.
You should pay attention and not provide personal information of the students, since the privacy of their data is very important.
On the other hand, when the teacher uses AI for class (for example, in Arduino C programming in the classroom), he or she must ensure that students make critical and ethical use of this technology, as well as not rely exclusively on it for the performance of activities. AI is a support, it should not be a mechanism to prevent the performance of certain tasks.

Are there any advice that the teacher can give to others?

We advise you to combine traditional teaching methods with the use of AI in the classroom in order to motivate students and acquire knowledge in a more dynamic way.
On the other hand, GPT-4 is a very useful tool for personalizing student training. It can be very useful to use it to adapt it to the needs of students, especially to achieve the inclusion of students with special needs.
In addition, it can be very useful to evaluate the impact that the use of GPT-4 has in your classroom to know if it positively affects students’ education, improving the acquisition of knowledge. To do this, we recommend conducting periodic classroom surveys that allow us to make adjustments to the use of AI in the classroom, to achieve its maximum benefit.

Objectives

The use of artificial intelligence aims to create short questionnaires, extract images for content creation and receive support in programming with Arduino C. All this in addition, with the aim of receiving support that reduces the workload.

Example of implementation

In this case, we specify the steps to follow so that any teacher can create evaluation questionnaires:

Step 1: Define the context, level, and characteristics of the questionnaire. To achieve an answer that fits our needs and is as detailed as possible, it is very important to give GPT-4 as much information as possible. In this case, we will specify:

  • Context: the subject. What subject are you a teacher of? In this case, the teacher teaches the subject of interior electrical installations.
  • Level of the students. What course are they in? How difficult is the questionnaire? In this case, they are first-year VET education students. They have just started their studies, so the teacher looks for a basic questionnaire.
  • Characteristics of the questionnaire. How many questions do you want the quiz to have? Do you want it to be a test type or Development questions? If it is a multiple-choice question, how many answers do you want it to have per question? In this case, the teacher wants a multiple-choice questionnaire of 10 questions with a maximum of 3 answers per question.

Step 2: Generate the question to ChatGPT-4. With the theme, characteristics and level defined, we must formulate the question that we are going to ask GPT-4. For example, in this case the following question was asked:

I am a first-year VET education teacher of indoor electrical installations. I would need an evaluation questionnaire for the multiple-choice subject with a maximum of 10 questions and 3 answers per question.

Step 3: GPT-4 answers and provides you with the questionnaire. Following this case, the AI answered the question asked as follows:

Of course, here is a multiple-choice evaluation questionnaire for the subject of indoor electrical installations in the first year of VET:

Step 5: Implement the questionnaire in the classroom.
