Learning to use AI in electrical and automatic installations VET

We present the use that a VET teacher makes of Artificial Intelligence create in-class activities for VET students of electrical and automatic installations in Spain. In Spain, VET students of Electrical and Automatic Installations are trained for two years in the assembly and maintenance of telecommunication infrastructures in buildings, electrical machines, automated systems, low-voltage electrical installations and home automation systems.

VET students between 17 and 25 years old.

Their qualification corresponds to Level 4 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (MECU). This level corresponds to level 4 of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning.

The context that leads the teacher to use ChatGPT in the classroom focuses on the need to innovate in teaching, increase student motivation and participation, and prepare them for a future in which technology plays a crucial role.

On many occasions, students find traditional learning methodologies monotonous and need dynamic tools that motivate them to continue studying, to learn more. In this context, the professor decides that ChatGPT can be a useful and innovative tool to capture his students’ interest in the subject and get them to participate in class.

On the other hand, Artificial Intelligence is currently increasingly active in everyday life. In this context, it is essential to teach students how to interact with AI, understand the possibilities it offers and its limits. It is important that they learn to use it critically and ethically.

Currently, although the impact of using artificial intelligence in the classroom cannot be accurately measured, it is expected to be significant for teachers and students.

The introduction of AI in classrooms will transform teaching methods, integrating innovative approaches that will make classrooms more dynamic and interactive. This change will not only capture the interest of students, but will also encourage greater active participation.

For students, AI represents a tool that can make learning more engaging. Interactive and technology-based activities have the potential to leave behind the monotony of traditional methods. By interacting with an AI, students not only gain knowledge about the subject matter at hand, but also develop digital and critical thinking skills essential for their personal and professional futures.

As for teachers, one of the most notable benefits of incorporating AI in the classroom is the reduction of the workload related to the preparation of educational materials.

Objectives

Creating activities in class to make them more dynamic, capture the interest of students and motivate them.

Example of implementation

In this case, we present as an example a classroom activity to implement activities using ChatGPT to keep students’ attention and encourage active participation. With this activity we seek that students learn to use AI in a critical and ethical way while acquiring knowledge of the subject.

We give as an example an activity in class so that students learn in a dynamic and motivating way to use AI critically and ethically while learning concepts from the subject syllabus. The activity consists of giving students a question that they must ask ChatGPT and then creating a participatory debate in the classroom.

Step 1: Define the topic you want to cover in class. We must specify the subject and the level of the students with whom we are going to carry out the activity.

Step 2: Define the question you want to address in the classroom looking for it to encourage analysis and student participation in the classroom. If we don’t know what type of question we want to ask in class, we can also use ChatGPT to give us examples. To do this, with the context we have established, we will ask ChatGPT to tell us examples of questions we want to use. For example: I am a vocational training electricity teacher, I want to carry out an activity in class so that students learn in a dynamic and motivating way to use AI critically and ethically while learning concepts from the subject syllabus. The activity consists of giving them a question to ask ChatGPT and then creating a participatory debate in the classroom. What kind of question can I ask? Give me examples please. For example: What are the main types of electrical circuits and how do they differ from each other in terms of design and practical application?

Step 3: Introduce the activity in the classroom. Explain to your students what the activity consists of and what the objectives are.

Step 4: Explain to students how to use ChatGPT. Provide an explanation in class with a demonstration that allows students to understand how to use it.

Step 5: Implement the activity in the classroom. During the implementation of the activity, it is advisable to give them concepts related to the subject to advance in the syllabus and for students to learn in a much more dynamic way.

  • Ask students to open ChatGPT on classroom computers and ask the question you designed to the AI.
  • Each student must analyze and reflect on the answer and identify if the information is correct or incorrect. At this point, we can take the opportunity to explain to students the importance of developing critical thinking.
  • Generate a discussion in class (if the classroom is very large, it is advisable to divide it into groups). Students will need to share the bugs they have found or the adjustments and improvements that need to be made to get a more appropriate response.
  • Adjust the question. Building on the previous discussion, ask students to make adjustments and ask the AI a new question to get an answer that better fits their needs. At this point, it is important that each student formulates the question they consider appropriate, so that they can then see how the AI responds to the questions of their classmates.
  • Interaction with AI. Students will ask a question more adjusted to ChatGPT and analyze the answer again, comparing it with the previous one.
  • Generate a debate again in which together with the students you analyze the answers.

Step 6: Create a survey for the students to find out their opinion and be able to adapt other activities to their needs. To do this, you can use ChatGPT to help you design your survey.

  • Prepare the question you want to ask. To do this, we must specify the type of activity we have carried out as detailed and precise as possible, the type of survey we want to carry out and our objective. With all AIs we must define the context and what we want as precisely as possible, as it will allow us to obtain an answer that is as adjusted as possible to our needs.
  • Ask the question. For example: “I have done an activity in class for my students. During the activity, the students asked ChatGPT a question that I gave them (What are the main types of electrical circuits and how do they differ from each other in terms of design and practical application?) and we generated a participatory debate in which the students had to develop critical thinking to analyze whether the AI’s answers were correct or incorrect and adjust them. at the same time that they acquired concepts of the subject. I want to create a simple survey that allows me to know the opinion of the students about this activity and their motivation to be able to carry out more adapted activities. What questions should I ask?”
  • ChatGPT offers us an answer. For example, with the previous question the answer he offers is the following:

Creating a simple but effective survey will allow you to get valuable feedback from your students on the activity carried out. Here are some questions you can include in the survey to gauge students’ opinion and motivation:

Survey Format
To make data collection easier, you can create this survey on an online platform such as Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, or any other survey service you use. Make sure students can respond anonymously if it encourages more honest feedback.
This survey will provide you with useful information about how your students perceive the integration of technology in the classroom and will help you adjust your future activities to be more effective and motivating.

  • Review and adjust. We will review all the information you have provided to us to check that it is correct, we will make the necessary adjustments in case there are errors or we want to make improvements.
  • Create the survey in one of the formats proposed by the AI, such as Google Forms.

Step 7: Implement the survey in the classroom.

Step 8: Analyze the survey result and create new activities.

Thanks to this dynamic activity, students will not only acquire concepts and knowledge of the subject, but will also learn how to use AI in the classroom in a critical and ethical way. In addition, it will allow you to analyze and evaluate their interest in order to carry out new activities that are more motivating and adapted to their needs.
