Many students find long texts tiring, struggle to review their notes, lack a structured approach, and sometimes have a negative attitude towards academic writing. Podcasts can cover a range of content: explaining a concept or a professional procedure, providing a method, preparing for an assessment, or summarising content spanning several pages.

  • Listening again helps pupils consolidate concepts at their own pace.
  • Differentiated teaching without stigmatisation: the same resources for everyone, but at an individual pace.

  • Production is much faster than before thanks to AI.

Podcasts have been used in training for several years, with proven results. Their main limitation — production time — has now been overcome thanks to advances in AI in text comprehension and the generation of natural-sounding voices. The teacher produces the podcast with the help of AI; learners listen to it as a learning resource.

Content validation

AI-generated content must be systematically checked and validated by the teacher before being shared.

Accessibility

Plan how the podcast will be integrated and ensure that all pupils can access the audio files (equipment, internet connection).

Passive listening

Listening on its own can remain passive. It is advisable to combine it with a quiz or a summary exercise, or to use it as a resource for producing something.

Example of implementation

This guide provides a step-by-step method for creating a podcast on the topic of dealing with a dissatisfied guest in a hotel.

Step 1 — Prepare your content source

Before opening NotebookLM, write (or compile) a text on the procedure for dealing with a dissatisfied guest. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT for help:

“Write a 300-word instructional text for CAP Accommodation students on the procedure for dealing with a guest who is dissatisfied with their room: active listening, rephrasing, possible solutions, professional attitude.”

Reread and edit the text you’ve produced — this is your starting point.


Step 2 — Open NotebookLM and import the text

  1. Go to notebooklm.google.com (a Google account is all you need)
  2. Create a new notebook
  3. Paste your text as source text (or import a PDF of your lecture notes)

Step 3 — Generate the podcast

  1. In the right-hand panel, click on “Audio Overview
  2. Click on “Generate
  3. NotebookLM automatically generates a natural conversation between two voices — as if two colleagues were explaining the procedure, asking each other questions and giving practical examples
  4. Listen to the result (usually 2 to 4 minutes long)
  5. Download the MP3 file

Step 4 — Validate the content

Listen carefully again and check that:

  • the steps in the procedure are correct and in the right order
  • the professional vocabulary is used correctly (rephrasing, empathy, compensation, etc.)
  • nothing is inaccurate or pedagogically inappropriate

If necessary, go back to step 1, refine the source text and regenerate.


Step 5 — Information for students

Upload the MP3 to Pronote, Moodle or Éléa with clear instructions, for example:

“Listen to this podcast before the next lesson. Note down the three key steps for dealing with a dissatisfied customer.”

To avoid passive listening, pair it with a simple activity: a mini-quiz on Quizizz, a worksheet to complete, or a role-play in class based on what they have learnt.
