Making checklists to analyse circuits in electrical and automatic installations VET

We present the case of the use of Artificial Intelligence in VET education by a VET teacher of electrical and automatic installations at the IES Enrique Tierno Galván educational center in Moncada. VET students of Electrical and Automatic Installations are trained for two years in the assembly and maintenance of telecommunication infrastructures in buildings, electrical machines, automated systems, low-voltage electrical installations and home automation systems. This centre is part of the network of public schools managed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the GVA. The IES has become a benchmark educational centre in the region of L'Horta Nord, with a talent project for students with a great capacity for learning. Currently, the center has 85 professors of different specialties and welcomes more than 800 students, of which 15% have economic, geographical and social obstacles.

VET students between 17 and 25 years old. Their qualification corresponds to Level 4 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (MECU). This level corresponds to level 4 of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning.

The context that leads this teacher to use this technology for content creation is based on reducing the workload and generating updated and innovative content.
On the one hand, the teacher’s workload is very high, since it is not only reduced to teaching, but also includes numerous responsibilities such as planning classes, correcting activities, supporting students, among others. Faced with this situation, the teacher looks to the use of AI as a support to alleviate part of that workload and allow him to concentrate on very relevant factors, such as supporting students and creating content adapted to their needs.
On the other hand, with the use of AI for content creation, this professor seeks to generate more dynamic and attractive content for his students, leave aside more classic teaching methodologies and look for more innovative methods that capture the student’s attention and generate enthusiasm for their subject.
In this context, using ChatGPT for content creation for your electricity classroom allows you to design dynamic and innovative materials that can capture your students’ attention and facilitate their training, while reducing their workload.

In the case of teachers, the impact will be very positive, as the use of AI will allow:

  • Reduce the time spent preparing and creating content adapted to the needs and characteristics of the classroom, such as exams and quizzes, dynamic activities, materials, etc.
  • Access resources based directly on their needs and preferences (avoiding extensive internet searches).
  • Personalize and adapt materials for students with special needs.

In the case of students, the use of AI for their training will allow them to:

  • Solve doubts and delve into topics that are being taught in class.
  • Acquire training in a dynamic and personalized way.
  • Develop digital and technological skills.

ChatGPT, developed in 2022 by OpenAI, is a chat system with which you can interact with an Artificial Intelligence trained to hold conversations. To start using this AI you have to access the official website (https://chatgpt.com/auth/login), create an account or use your google account and start using it. To interact with the AI you must ask for information on the topic that interests you and it will give you complete answers. For example, ask them to suggest activities to do in class and create educational content for your students.
ChatGPT has a default free option that limits the number of questions to AI per hour. However, there is a paid version that offers additional functionalities.

The use of Artificial Intelligence is an innovative mechanism for education and training, as it allows training to be personalized and adapted to the needs of students and teachers, it provides help both to students, resolving doubts, providing concrete data and guiding them in their training, and to teachers, reducing the workload and supporting them in the creation of dynamic content, interactive and innovative.

In addition, the use of AI promotes sustainability practices by reducing the use of printed materials and facilitating access to digital educational resources.

The software that has been used is ChatGPT. It is a tool developed by OpenAI that has a free version accessible through its website and a paid version (ChatGPT Plus) that, for a cost of $20 per month, offers priority access, faster response times and access to more advanced models such as GPT-4. Despite not being Open Source, it is integrated into various platforms and applications through OpenAI’s API (Application Programming Interface). It is available in multiple languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.

To which points the teacher must pay specific attention?

  • Ask clear and detailed questions to get answers that are as tailored as possible to your needs.
  • Describe the context as far as possible (level of students, subject, studies…).
    Review all the information that ChatGPT has provided you to ensure that it is correct and useful for your class.
  • There are times when ChatGPT will not give you the definitive answer, but it can guide you to create very useful content. Use the information provided to you to adapt it to your needs.
  • You must not provide personal information about students or other teachers.

Are there any limits that the teacher must be aware of?

  • It is very important to review all the information that the AI provides you. Although it can provide very precise and detailed information, it does not mean that it is always correct. It is advisable to review and validate all the content it provides, ensuring that students receive accurate and correct information.
  • Another limit that we must take into account as teachers is to avoid depending on AI to create content for class. AI is a really useful support mechanism, but it’s important to keep the teacher’s work going.

Are there any advice that the teacher can give to others?

  • Research how the use of ChatGPT or any other AI can support your classes.
  • Try creating other types of resources, such as activities, exams…
  • Teach your students how to use it correctly, encouraging critical and responsible use, preventing them from using it to study less.
  • Collaborate with other teachers.
  • Analyze the impact of using AI in your classroom by surveying your students.

Objectives

The use of AI by this professor of electricity has a double objective. On the one hand, to reduce the workload and, on the other hand, to generate content that is dynamic and that captures the attention of its students so that they can better understand the contents of the subject.

Example of implementation

The teacher decides to use AI to create content for students and allow them to acquire knowledge in a more dynamic way. Specifically, he is interested in creating checklists to help students review and ensure that they have considered all the important aspects after analyzing an electrical circuit. To do this, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Identify the topic you want the checklist for. In this case, the teacher chooses to make a checklist for the analysis of electrical circuits.

Step 2: Specify the details. It is important to specify the context so that AI can give us the most accurate answer possible. Therefore, we will explain for which subject what training it is (For example: the subject of circuit analysis of the training of electrical and automatic installations) and the level of studies (basic, intermediate, advanced).

Step 3: Ask ChatGPT the question. The question should be clear and detailed, so that the AI receives all the information it needs to create a checklist that is as accurate as possible. In this case the teacher asks:
